AARP The JournalI’m incredibly excited as I had my first article published with AARP! The Journal is targeted to thought leaders and policy makers around the world and addresses issues on global aging. It is distributed in 48 countries and has won numerous awards for outstanding journalism, communication and design.

My article, Traveling Together, emphasizes the need for city managers throughout the world to address transportation and accessibility challenges as more older adults than ever are traveling – currently 45.5 million annually (and growing in number) in the US alone. Many older adults travel independently, but with multigenerational US households on the rise and increasing numbers of Americans (currently 34 million-plus) caring for an older relative, the number of caregivers aged 50 and under who travel with their older parents continues to climb—in many cases, an arrangement that makes travel possible for older people who would be unable or unwilling to vacation on their own.

As someone who has traveled 300,000+ miles thus far with Mom, we’ve no intention of stopping even after she needs a wheelchair to get around. At 84, I figure we have another 10 or 15 years of travel! So get on those accessibility issues city managers – Mom and I are coming!
